Abstract:
We live in an ongoing "modern" world, just like fish in water without knowing it. Enlightenment and rationality were once fashionable concepts among progressive intellectuals, coming from the "long nineteenth century" - the era of the Great Revolution, Industrial Revolution, Nation State, and scientific progress, which constituted European hegemony. The Europe described by Norihiko Fukui not only shows the intoxicating "light" side, but also the huge "shadow" that comes with it. Finally, the hegemony collapsed with World War I and World War II. Chen Heng'an, associate professor of the Department of History at National Cheng Kung University, will discuss with us how concepts from Germany and France have influenced the world, and how should Taiwan understand this period of world history?
