Description:
The issue of migrant workers is an important one that cannot be overlooked intoday's process of globalization. As one of the emerging market economiesin Asia, Taiwan has attracted numerous blue-collar migrant workers from Southeast Asia. While migrant workers contribute significantly to Taiwan's economy, Taiwanese society has long held stereotypes about them, and their jobs and lives are relatively unknown to the public. This course will focus on industrial migrant workers who, compared to social welfare migrant worker, are less visible in Taiwanese daily world. Through lectures and documentary screenings, this course will lead students to understand the living conditions and struggles of migrant workers in the industries of agriculture and fishery and their social consequences in Taiwan.
This course will take place on the weekend of April 13-14, and will be combined with the international workshop "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back?" jointly organized by the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom, National Cheng Kung University, and National Taiwan University, which will be held on April 15th (Monday) at NCKU. Students can choose to participate in either the morning or afternoon session of the workshop to complete 18 hours of course credit. By participating in the workshop and lecture activities, students will comprehend the current issues surrounding migrant workers and social movements for labor rights in East Asian countries.
