簡介:
Migrant labor is often studied at its destination – labor, often diffi cult, exploited, or poorly renumerated labor, exists to send money back to rural communities to sustain families or build hopes. But movement involves transformation and risk, and an engagement with an unknown realm. Workers change, just as homes change, and love and aspirations in turn alter and are altered by travel. The migrants’ ability to deal with otherness both provides a means towards increasing one’s own potency but the risk of making one an outsider “back home.” Here, I trace migrants from northeastern Thailand to East Asia from both migrants’ perspective as well as those who depend upon this migration, questioning how stable our own understandings of ourselves and our homes are, and exploring the instability of hopes, dreams, and loves.
